Junji Ito being both transgressive and funny is a good time, and Strange Hizikuri Siblings definitely isn’t filler to pad out Lovesickness and still features horror elements like creepy eyes and facial expressions and a haunted house chase sequence. Junji Ito is at his best when he’s pulling apart aspects of everyday life and revealing how unsettling it can be. I'd compare it to a roller coaster, but there's rarely a down moment. While I wouldn’t call any of the stories in Lovesickness a favorite of mine, they’re all effective. It starts out strong and only gets more frightening as it goes on.
